Sitting in the far corner of the room by the window, me and my gal pals sipped on some ice cold coca-cola and chatted away while we waited for our food. It was a Thursday evening (pre-weekend antics) so we all headed to Bird, a newly favourite joint situated in the heart of Shoreditch (also available in various parts of London). I like coming here – firstly because of the food and secondly the atmosphere. A chill spot with a great menu of fried chicken, wings, burgers, fries and all – think contemporary diner, with industrial like decor – brick walls, a mixture of colored and wooden table tops, an open bar and an easy to read menu (and good food).

The Menu


Here it’s all chicken, ‘free range and fried except for the dessert menu and a few vegetarian options of deeply fried beetroot patty and Asian chopped salad with the option of chicken.


Tummy growling, I feasted my eyes on the ‘Original Waffle Burger’ – think boneless chicken thighs coated in a crispy batter with jalapeno peppers, melted cheese, bacon and maple syrup all sandwiched between a mildly sweet and savory toasted waffle. The balance of flavour was just right and as I sliced into the burger, (although you may use your hands) I could see the layers piled on top of one another, the bacon slightly hidden.
As you bite into the slightly greasy yet -crispy coating  which is deep fried,  the tenderness of meat sinks in and a sudden unexpected surge of  sweetness from the maple syrup comes right through. Nothing is too sharp – the balance just right with the addition of peppers, cheese and bacon. It’s the kind of burger that would leave you craving for more – lingering in the back until you come to feast on it again.

Finishing off with dessert, we indulged in a rich maple glazed ice cream sandwich – vanilla ice cream with whipped cream sandwiched between a glazed doughnut, finished off with a chocolate (or caramel) drizzle. It was naughty, but it was deliciously tempting having read about it on the menu. How could one resist?

One thing I know is that i’ll be back again. Who knows, you might catch me tucking into a burger or a wing or 2.
If you haven’t been do give it a try, you may find yourself craving the waffle burger and may return for the second time in a row like I did. This is just a warning.
